(Sun) Dried Carrots – a Dog Chew

Hello everyone!

I have been experimenting with alternative dog chews for a while. Those store bought chews, and dental sticks can really weight on your pocket!

My dog is very picky when it comes to food, and treats. However, she has always been in love with carrots. I usually threw an organic carrot (with peel on) in the microwave, zapped it for a minute, cooled it, and let my dog have a field day. (The microwaving helps make the carrot more easily digestible, by the way).

As much as she was in love she was with these minute microwaved carrots, she’d eat about half of it and leave the rest behind. However, she’d come back to them once they were all dried up and super chewy. Since I live in Las Vegas, and it’s hot as balls here during the summer, I put some carrots out and let them sun dry until they reached the desired chewiness.

I forgot to take a picture, so I took this one from google search

Turns out, she really loves them more! They also seem easily digestible, as well. People’s dogs in the dog park also really like them. So far, no dog has refused my sun dried carrots!

When fall comes around, I will try the same with sweet potatoes, but for right now, sun dried carrot sticks it is.

Have you experimented with tried vegetables as alternative dog chews? I f yes, I would love to hear about it!

Thank you 🙂

I use food dehydrator to dry slices of sweet potatoes for my dogs. You can cut them into flat, wide strips, or into a more square shape like a french fry that takes a little longer to dry. Either way, my dogs go crazy for them! I sprinkle them with cinnamon and keep them in a plastic bag in the freezer. And considering that sweet potatoes are uber cheap, they make a great alternative to a $20 bag of the same thing from the pet store.

Since we live in Florida, I think this could easily work as a healthy dog treat!
